The Elevator Speech Rebellion
Picture yourself at a dinner party and a stranger walks up to and asks, “So, what is it you do?” You eloquently articulate your corporate elevator speech, which would make your boss proud. However, the stranger politely turns away saying, “Hmmm, that’s nice,” and leaves you for more interesting conversation.
Many people struggle with a response when asked what it is they do. If you’ve been there, or always seem to avoid putting yourself in those predicaments, then perhaps what you need is an “Audio Logo.”
An audio logo is a very powerful networking tool that is easy to use and has proven effective in casual conversations, interviews, and resumes. An audio logo personalizes your corporation’s elevator speech, providing you with a non-threatening, comfortable, authentic, and natural way to answer the question, “What do you do?”
This workshop helps you create one short, articulate sentence that describes what you do in terms that are meaningful to whomever you are speaking. Even if you’re a self-proclaimed networking expert, learning how to create an audio logo can make you even more effective.
return to topLeadership for First-line Supervisors
You are about to promote Erin to a shift supervisor position. When she shows up in her new role, you realize things will be quite different for her:
- her current friends will become her subordinates
- her current shift supervisors will become her peers
- she will be accountable not only for her work, but for that of everyone in her department
- she will paid more, but more will be expected of her
You know that these changes can be overwhelming to someone who does not have prior supervisory experience. You also know that as Erin’s supervisor, you are responsible for her success, as well as the success of her department. So, how will you prepare Erin for her new leadership role?
Organizations promote people into supervisory positions every day; however, few of the newly promoted are prepared for the leadership responsibilities that come with their new positions. How much more effective could new supervisors be if they knew and understood the style of leadership they preferred, and had tools they could use to influence people in different situations?
This workshop helps newly appointed supervisors create action plans that build upon their strengths. It also introduces them to various leadership styles and theories that prepare them for their new leadership role.
return to topMind Mapping
Think about the last time you attended a meeting, seminar, class, or workshop. Do you remember the experience of taking notes? Were you able to capture their essence in enough detail to understand what they meant? Could you read what you wrote? How did you handle the fact the speaker jumped from topic to topic and back again?
Many people cringe at the thought of taking notes and do such a lousy job at it that they seldom refer back to what they wrote anyway. These same feelings can hold true in writing papers or preparing briefings. Most people would rather be cleaning their attic!
If this sounds like you, then you might be interested in learning how to “mind map.” Mind mapping is a process of creating notes that are easy to produce, follow, understand, and remember. They can capture themes and concepts in a single symbol and can pare down data, ideas, and opinions into key words. In addition to note taking, mind maps can be used in problem solving, journaling, storytelling, teaching, and preparing presentations, to name a few.
This workshop can teach you how to capture and present information in ways that are congruent with how you think. Come to the workshop with a blank sheet of paper and multi-colored pens and markers, and be prepared to "create outside the lines!"
return to topMyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
Todd’s abilities to focus on end-results, make quick decisions, and complete projects ahead of schedule, just got him promoted to a new position in a new department. During his first day, he observed Sarah spending more time organizing than doing, Eric thinking things to death and not making a decision, Heather spending more time socializing than working, and Al working right up to and pushing a deadline. On his way home, Todd thought about the challenges ahead of him, wondering, “What’s wrong with these people!”
Life is about relationships, and often times what we don’t understand about one another becomes an annoyance…or worse, a prejudgment. As we gain more experience in life, our mental models and habits form our values and beliefs and shape how we prefer to work and live. The more we experience, the more engrained these become, and the more we prefer to respond and act in certain ways.
An MBTI workshop allows people to discover their personal preferences, understand and appreciate differences in others, and explore issues from varying perspectives. The workshop experience helps increase people’s capacity to relate to others in both their personal and professional lives.
return to topPersonal Power:
It's All About Me--Or Is It?Anne, a 2-year-old toddler, sits in her highchair banging her cup against the chair’s tray, yelling “More milk, more milk!” Anne’s father tends to her, filling her cup with milk and returning it to her. Who has more power?
What comes to mind when you hear the word “power?” Is it controlling, dangerous, coercive, corruptive, or freeing? Is it good or bad, infinite or finite?
We all work from various levels of power throughout our careers and personal lives. So, what is personal power and how can people become more personally powerful? What are its stages and why do we fluctuate between them? How can we nurture our power to provide for ourselves and for the greater good?
Epiphancy answers these questions and more in this workshop. Its design has people reflect on their personal and professional lives and examine them through a new lens. Participants learn what stage of personal power they are in and how each stage influences their journeys.
return to topSensitivity Awareness:
Acknowledging Differences in Yourself and OthersThe effects of cabin fever seem evident in Steve’s department. What was once revered as friendly competition between sections is now rampant with intimidation, coercion, blatant prejudice, and even name-calling. Corporate values of trust, respect, and collaboration have waned. Steve is concerned things will go from bad to worse if actions are not taken soon.
For as much as we would like to change the behavior of others, we cannot. People choose to behave as they do. Their choices are based on personal beliefs, attitudes, values, and experiences and only they can change their behavior. However, what we can do is help people learn more about themselves and, in turn, learn more about the differences in others.
Epiphancy helps raise people’s awareness of their own behavior and its impact on others around them. Depending on the situation, workshops may raise awareness based on:
- self-assessments (e.g., MBTI, Emotional Intelligence, Predictive Index)
- infinity group identification (e.g., age, race, ethnicity, gender, status)
- inferences (e.g., assumptions, beliefs, attitudes, experiences)
Epiphancy works closely with clients to tailor a program that raises awareness of behaviors having a negative impact in their organization.
